For Individuals
Looking for and deciding on a therapist is a process that often begins long before the first phone call. Most people that are ready to make a call or ask a friend for a therapist are in a lot of pain -- some are just into personal growth.If you get a referral from a friend, that helps. But, if not, how do you decide on a therapist just by looking at an advertisement or a website like this? One thing I know for sure is that I'm in the trust business. If you don't trust me, it's unlikely that we will ever work together. If you don't have a good sense of me from reading my website or haven't heard directly about me from someone else, then it may take a phone call or a session or two to really feel whether the two of us are a good fit or not.
I want you know that I'm in therapy as of this writing and have had around 10 years of therapy myself over the last 20 years. I believe it's important to continue to work on me so I can be the best Russell possible.
I also want you to know that I decided to become a therapist while I was still in high school -- it's been my calling since then. I entered college the January after high school and went straight through to licensure. That is to say, I have only ever had one career.
I have classical training in Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy as described by James F. T. Bugental. Much of my personal therapy has followed Bugental's recommended style of lying on the therapy couch with my eyes closed so that I could access deeper parts of myself. Many of my individual clients use this style at some point in their work, as well. It gives them a chance to sink deeper into themselves in a session and focus a little less on the therapist-client relationship. And, I do use the therapist-client relationship a lot in my work and that often includes my responses to you in the moment, as well as self-disclosure on my part.
